LDB Duel was founded in 2015 when it introduced a leather deck box to hold trading cards, like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic the Gathering. Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting out, having a sturdy and reliable deck box is essential. About ten years ago, Tristan Rousset, the store owner, was looking for just the right deck box.
"I wanted to create a deck box that would hold my deck, protect it well, and not be too bulky because I always brought a bunch of decks with me. I also loved playing Yu-Gi-Oh!"
When Tristan couldn't find what he was looking for, he crafted his own. He decided to see if he product would sell online, and it sold quickly to customers around the world. From there he added new designs, and customized the original leather design. Business expanded to the point where Tristan couldn’t keep up making deck boxes in his Ottawa, Ontario workshop, so he found a production partner and recreated the original Mach 1. This became the Mach 2, introduced about 5 years ago.
His online store opened in 2020 at ldbduel.com. The product line grew too. There are now 100s of designs of playmats, card sleeves, field centers. More products are being added all the time.
“But all of our products are based on the original idea that every customer needs a great gear that lets them add their own graphics and express their love of their game.”
Q: How did you learn about Fera?
“We tried a number of apps on Shopify before we found Fera. Basically trial-and-error on the Shopify app store.”
Q: What were a couple of challenges you were trying to solve before using Fera?
“We needed a system that can collect reviews and do it objectively, without hassling our customers. Reviews are very important to building a credible website that converts well. We needed our reviews to look like they were on-brand, and could use our brand identifiers.
We also needed some state-of-the-art support to create our systems. We aren't experts on these systems. We wanted to buy the support. And value for money is always an issue!”
Q: What other methods/strategies did you try in order to address those issues before using Fera?
“We tried soliciting reviews with a print product when we shipped out the product. We had a retail location, and asked for Google reviews at the counter. Basically we found that if we asked directly, then it was awkward, because people prefer not to have to face you when they tell you what they think!”
Q: How are you using Fera?
“We are selling on Shopify. The integration between Fera and Shopify is very elegant. Other systems I felt I had to check to make sure the app was working. Fera works well in the background. And it gets results.
Our customers like our products and we regularly receive good reviews that make it right to the site, once we approve them. We’ve been using Fera for approximately two years.”
Q: How has Fera helped the growth of LDB Duel?
“It's very important that people hitting our site understand that LDB Duel is a trustworthy business. Social proof, with Fera reviews, made a big difference to our conversion rate. Essentially it doubled it, once the reviews started appearing on listings.
And there is something that really works with the Fera app, because other apps didn't collect as many reviews as Fera does. It has doubled our review count.”

Q: Do you have any advice for other users or those looking to use it?
“It's important to have a good understanding of your production partners and their shipping or delivery times. When these change, it is important to review your timings for requests for reviews. You can't just set the times and forget them!”
